Obituary

Alice J. Stevenson, 88, of Gallipolis Ferry passed away at her home on Tuesday July 29, 2025, with family by her side. She was born October 13, 1936, in Faraday, WV, the 7th of 8 children to parents she adored-Frank & Maggie Weaver Large. Alice grew up in the coal camps of McDowell County WV where her dad worked at area coal mines in and around Amonate, VA. She was proud to be a coal miner's daughter.

Alice married Posey Stevenson on August 16, 1958. They moved from Welch, WV to Point Pleasant in May 1959 when Posey started working for Kaiser Aluminum. They were married for 52 years before his passing on September 29, 2010.

Alice worked briefly at Johnson's Grocery on Vine Street in Gallipolis OH as a cashier and in the meat department and at the Point Pleasant Medical Center. But she mostly devoted her life and time to caring for her family making sure they were all well taken care of…that her girls were in Sunday school at a young age; teaching them the importance of responsibility and hard work along with the golden rule of kindness; and providing limits along with consequences when needed; she made wonderful homemade meals with her girls fighting for the last servings of their favorites; running them to whatever activities they were in from swimming lessons to softball practice or games and Girl Scouts.

Alice was a Christian and attended the Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church until with advancing age she was unable. She volunteered her time on the church service committee helping with the clothes closet and food pantry.

Her favorite hobby was sewing, and she enjoyed making many of her girl's clothes while they were in school and even made most of her own clothing until her girls were grown. Mom LOVED cats and had many during her lifetime. Even near the end of her life, you could bring a cat in her room and watch her face light up. Alice was a caring and generous person giving food, clothing, or money anonymously wherever she saw a need. And selflessly cared for her parents and husband when their health declined.

Alice is survived by daughters…Cheryl Holland, Gallipolis Ferry WV; Barbara (Jeff) Patrick, Gallipolis OH; grandchildren…Jamie (Aaron) Stapleton, Crown City OH; Ryan Holland, Gallipolis Ferry WV; Henry (Lindsey) Patrick, Bidwell OH; great-grandchildren…Harper, Ella, and Jacqueline Patrick; her youngest sister Lockey Carr of  Johnson City TN; her former son-in-law Steve Holland, Leon WV; along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Maggie Large, her husband Posey, and siblings…infant brother Billy Large, Betty Large, Edith Meade, Marie Albano, Mary Ann Brown, and Charlie Large.

Per Alice's wishes there will be no services. She requested in lieu of flowers to please make donations to Rio Christian Church food pantry, PO Box 353, Rio Grande OH 45674.

A special thank you to Hospice of Huntington for their wonderful care the last few weeks of Alice's life including Christie, Jennifer, Kelly, Josh, Lisa, Lois, Mary, and Wendy.
