Capt. Dewitte L. "Bus" Beaver, of St. Louis, MO Dec. 4, 1928 - Sept. 17, 2015. Beloved husband of E. Alice (Cadle) Beaver for 67 years. Devoted father of Sheila (Bruce) Read, Stephanie (David) Griffin, and Heidi Beaver; and PaPaw of Bonnie (Travis) Stebbins, Amanda Read, Alexander Beaver, and Shawn Griffin.
Capt. Beaver was born in Arbuckle, WV to James "Mike" and Erna Beaver. He joined the Mississippi Valley Barge Line at age 15, stoking tow boat engines. He was promoted to deckhand in 1944, mate in 1947 and became a master pilot in 1951. He work diligently to become the youngest inland waterways captain to be licensed on all three major rivers, a record he held until surpassed by his nephew many years later. He was instrumental in incorporating the Masters Mates and Pilots Union into the Teamsters Union. He moved his family to St. Louis when promoted to Marine Superintendent in 1963. Capt. Beaver retired in 1987 as Vice President of Operations to enjoy his second home on the Kanawha River and travel the world.
Capt. Beaver a 31st degree Yorkish Rite Mason, a member of the Moolah Shrine, St. Mark's UMC and the Point Pleasant River Museum. He was also a member of the Propeller Club, AWO Coast Guard Liaison Committee, AWO Navigation & Structures Committee ,Ad Hoc Committee for Ports & Waterways, , River Operations Committee for Common Carriers, and served as Chairman of the Navigation & Structures Committee of Waterways Operation, Chairman of Government Industry River Advisory Committee and Conference Chairman of the Dock & Bridge Committee. He will be remembered for his passion for family and the river.
Visitation 10:00 - 11:30 a m with funeral to follow on Sept. 22, 2015 at St. Mark's UMC, 315 Graham Road, Florissant, MO. The family would like to extend special thanks to St. Luke's Hospice, Mary Ashford, Dr. Todd Silverman and Dr. Jill Oberle. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Mark's UMC or St. Luke's Hospice.
Visitation at Crow-Hussell Funeral Home in Point Pleasant, WV will be Friday September 25, 2015 from 10:30-12:30. A graveside service will follow at Leon Cemetery at 1PM.
