George E. Johnson, age 84, of Point Pleasant, died Thursday morning, October 1, 2009, at Holzer Medical Center, in Gallipolis. George was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during WWII. He was a retired insurance agent with People's Life Insurance Company and was also a former Mason County Sheriff, serving during the Silver Bridge Disaster of 1967.
Born September 11, 1925, in Point Pleasant, he was a son to the late Wesley Isaac and Ida Catherine (Folden) Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth M. (Hall) Johnson; his son, Danny E. Johnson; brothers, Robert F. and Richard F. Johnson; and sisters, Dorothy Bonds and Louise Henry.
George is survived by his grandsons and their wives, Christopher M. and Dawn Johnson, of Oldsmar, FL and Danny Lee and Tracy Johnson, of Spring Hill, FL; great-grandchildren, Brian and Wade Johnson and Ashley and Zac Johnson; a brother, Melvin Johnson, of Point Pleasant and sister, Charlotte Stover, of Ohio; and many loving nieces and nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Monday, October 5, 2009, at Crow-Hussell Funeral Home, with Pastor Carl Swisher officiating. Burial will follow in Suncrest Cemetery, with Military graveside honors being provided by the West Virginia Honor Guard and the American Legion, Mason County Post # 23. Officers with the Mason County Sheriff's Department will also be present. Visitation will be held at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Monday.
