George Barksdale McCausland, 88, of Maplewood Farm, Pliny, WV, passed away Tuesday, December 9th, at Pleasant Valley Nursing & Rehab facility.
Born January 1, 1920, he was the son of Amanda Ellen and Samuel Hannah McCausland and grandson of General John McCausland. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marjorie Berkeley McCausland, oldest son, Samuel Berkeley McCausland and infant son; three infant brothers; and younger brother Emmett McCausland.
He is survived by his son, James W. McCausland and wife, Brenda; his daughter, Georgina M. McDermitt and husband, Donnie; his only grandchild, Stacey Wamsley and husband, John; two great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Samantha Wamsley; one brother, Andrew McCausland and his wife, Gloria of Houston, Texas; a nephew; nieces; cousins; and a host of many dear and faithful friends.
He was a member of the Pliny Presbyterian Church and attended the Buffalo Presbyterian Church. He spent most of his life doing what he enjoyed most – farming and beef cattle production. He was Mason County State Road Supervisor in the 70's, worked in Charleston as District I Regional Community Affairs Coordinator and also in District II in Huntington until the late 80's when he retired to his farm.
He was proud to have served in World War II in the Navy, achieving rank as Chief Electrician Mate. He served in North Atlantic Fleet with most of his duty consisting of escorting convoys, in the Asiatic Fleet aboard mine sweepers; participated in 17 invasions; Subic Bay, Philippines at the end of WWII. He was awarded 6 Battle Stars, numerous Letters of Commendation and citations, including the Presidential Unit Citation, and was honorably discharged in 1945.
He was the past President of the VFW, a past President of the Farm Bureau, past chairman of the Democratic Committee of Mason County. He was awarded the Mason County Democrat of the Year in 1993. He helped orchestrate the formation of the Mason County Historical Society of which he served as President. He also served on various committees and boards throughout Mason County, and was a Kentucky Colonel as well as a Tennessee Squire.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and "Pop." He was known by all as a great historian and storyteller of his lifetime experiences. He will be forever loved and missed.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 12, 2008, at Crow-Hussell Funeral Home, in Point Pleasant, with Rev. Max Spurlock and Rev. Carl Swisher officiating. Burial will follow in McCausland Family Cemetery in Pliny, West Virginia. Visitation will be held at the Crow-Hussell Funeral Home on Thursday evening, from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.
