Our beloved husband, brother and friend has gone home to be with his heavenly Father and beloved dog Doc. He passed away on October 2, 2015, at St. Mary's Hospital in Huntington, WV from Pneumonia. He was surrounded by many friends and family. Jeff was born May 30, 1954 and was a member of Bellmeade U. M. Church.
Jeff was married to Kathy Woods in 1979. He was preceded in death by his parents William (Bill) and Betty Jo Gardner. He has 3 sisters, Vicky Gardner and Olivia Garrison (Greg) of Point Pleasant and Rhonda Gardner of Tacoma, WA. He had two beloved dogs Annie and Sniper.
Jeff retired from Goodyear/M&G Polymers in 2008 when he was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy. He never let the disease get in the way of what he wanted to do. It may have taken him days or even weeks to finish a project but he would get it done even if he had to be the instructor to someone else. Just ask Kathy... she can put ball bearings in a mowing deck.
Jeff liked to spend time with his friends, two of which checked on him every day, Mokie Simpkins and Cloyd Smith. All the neighbors in "Fettyville" always looked forward to him making his rounds each day. They looked after him and made sure he was ok
.
He was not much of a traveler unless there was a gun show involved. In his earlier years after graduating from Point Pleasant High in 1972 he liked to work on his cars and he had so many even he lost count. He especially like to drag race his cars on the track and T&T. He was an auto mechanic and could build any motor with the best of them. His first job was with the Chevrolet garage in Point Pleasant and Biggs dept. store. Most recently he had a 1970 Chevrolet truck he was most proud of and won many trophies at car shows. When the muscular dystrophy took the strength from legs and he could no longer push the clutch in he sold the truck to his sister Rhonda. He then was so proud that she had "his" truck.
Jeff loved to spend time with his class mates and always looked forward to the class reunions. He was always trying to get more people to come to the bi-monthly dinners. Every year he looked forward to his birthday because he knew his sister Rhonda was coming for a visit. On is sixtieth birthday he said he wanted to have a few people over. Kathy told him they would have a party but would have it at Krodel Park. Jeff was surprised that 80 people showed up that day. His close friends Larry and Billy Carol made all the food and he had not one but 7 birthday cakes made by his friend Missy Rardin. He had a blast and kept saying I can't believe that many people came to see me. Jeff was liked by everyone he met.
Jeff was a role model to anyone with a handicap. He kept going until the day he could no longer carry the burden of his disease. He did not give up until God decided Jeff had had enough of this earth. His work here is now finished.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 6, 2015, at Kirkland Memorial Gardens, with Pastor Bob Patterson officiating. Burial will follow.
