Obituary

Johnnie Bernice (Lowe) Monroe of Point Pleasant, Wv died early Monday, January 14, 2013 at Holzer Assisted Living in Gallipolis, Oh where she had lived since August 2010. She was 89. Johnnie Lowe was born March 3, 1923 at Round Knob, Roane Co, Wv the third of three daughters of Arthur W and Elizabeth Gertrude (Hersman) Lowe. Johnnie loved her life in Round Knob and fondly remembered her relatives and friends there where she and her family lived on the farm of her Grandfather and Grandmother James Anderson and Sarah Jane (Mitchell) Lowe.

Johnnie Bernice attended Spencer High School and was valedictorian in 1941 along with her best friend Ruth Starr(Hyer). She often recalled her teachers at Spencer High. She was editor of the school yearbook. She was "Miss Yellowjacket" homecoming queen her senior year. She and her parents moved to Hampshire County Wv, where her father had bought 375 acres on Spring Gap Mountain and would raise peaches there. Shortly after Johnnie would join her sister Evelyn (Lowe) and her husband L.B. (Ducky) Hannaman in Point pleasant and helped care for their little son "Lindy" She began working in Hall's Drug Store, "Jimmy" Hall put her to work in the soda fountain. There she met William Emory Monroe, Jr., called "Jibber" in those days. Johnnie and Emory were married October 17, 1942.

While Emory served in the Navy in WWII, Johnnie worked for a time at the Sylvaina plant on Main St. After the war, Johnnie and Emory made their home in Point Pleasant. She sang in "The Treblers" lead by William VanHorn. Johnnie was a faithful member of the Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church where she served as president of the Women of the Church and Deacon. She loved her church circle group and the travel, visiting, reading, and listening to the Bible. In the 1960's she was a teachers aide at Point Pleasant High Schoool. Johnnie was a member of the GFWC Woman's Club of Point Pleasant.

Johnnie was predeceased by her parents, two sisters,Evelyn Hannaman and Dorothy Hanley, her husband W.Emory Monroe (2004), two nieces, Paula (Monroe) Simpkins and Esther Hogsett and one nephew "Lindy" Hannaman. She is survived by her daughter Cheryl Whitley and her husband Daniel P., of Clintondale, NY her son Gary Monroe and his wife Marta Brockmeyer, of Newport, Ky, her grandson Daniel Emory Whitley of Rochester, NY beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family wishes to express gratitude to all the staff and residents of Holzer Assisted Living ; Clyde Jarvis;good friends of the Point Pleasant Presbyterian church; Roxanne Weaver;Brandy and Brandon Sweeney; the Rev. Farris and Mildred Burton. All services will be at Crow- Hussell Funeral Home on Thursday, January 17th. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the funeral service conducted by Rev. John Holland starting at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the Suncrest Cemetery in Point Pleasant. A luncheon reception will follow at the Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church at 8th and Main,.
