Ms. Lillian Gillespie Hyer, 101 years, passed away peacefully on Monday February 26, 2024 at her home in Kingston Residence of Vermilion in Vermillion, Oh.
She was born October 10, 1922 in Palmer (Braxton County) West Virginia to the late Jesse Arthur Gillespie and Vergie Lee Knight.
Lillian came from a large family of thirteen children. Growing up in the majestic mountains of West Virginia in a town called Palmer near Sutton, WV. Lillian and her older sister Mary Ann lived in a boarding house in Sutton to attend secondary school. Lillian and Mary Ann attended and graduated from Sutton High School in 1940. She then moved with her sister to Charleston, WV where they both worked for the Naval Ordnance Plant during WWII.
Lilian married her high school sweetheart Charles Johnson Hyer from Sutton WV on June 18, 1946 in a joint wedding ceremony with her sister in Kanawha County, WV.
They moved to Point Pleasant, WV in 1946 and Charles joined the law firm Somerville & Somerville, which subsequently became the firm Hyer and Littlepage. Charles and Lillian had the children, John, Sally, and Jane.
Lillian actively volunteered her time at Point Pleasant Valley Hospital as a candy striper nurse's aide for many years, and was and active long time member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She was also and avid armature golfer playing in tournaments all over the state. She also loved flower gardening, playing bridge and caring for animals..
Lillian was a proud longtime resident of Point Pleasant, WV for over 69 years until 2015 when she moved to Kingston Residence of Vermilion to be near her daughter and family.
Lillian will always be remembered by her friends and family as a loving, generous, kind sophisticated and high spirited woman that touched many lives throughout her lifetime.
Mrs. Lillian Gillespie Hyer is preceded in death by her parents Jesse and Vergie Gillespie, her loving husband Charles J. Hyer and her son John Charles Hyer.
She is survived by her siblings; Nancy (Gillespie) Sheldon and Charles "Chuck" Gillespie daughters Sally (Skip) Davis of Ohio, and Jane Hyer of Alaska. Her six grandchildren; Megan (Kevin) Tansey, Katie (Rock) Manchin, Lauren Davis, John (Christina) Davis, Lillian (Curtis) Tucker, Jessica Pringle and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1PM Saturday March 9, 2024, at Crow-Hussell Funeral Home officiated by Pastor Ronnie Tote with visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow at Kirkland Memorial Gardens and the church will be providing a buffet style dinner family and friends are invited to join.
