Lionel Leon "Lon" Smith, 94, of Point Pleasant and Newton died February 28, 2008 at St. Mary's Medical Center from complications of injuries received in an automobile accident.
He was born September 3, 1913, to William Cary and Ida Boggs Smith. He was the youngest of six children, all of whom preceded him in death. Born and raised in Uler (Roane County), he graduated from Clay County High School. He went to Glenville State College and then taught in several one room schools in Roane County, while saving money to attend WVU. He earned both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Agriculture from West Virginia University.
Upon graduation he taught briefly at Moundsville High School and was drafted into the military for World War II. He entered as a private and was promoted and sent to Officer Candidate School. In the Infantry, he became a 1st Lieutenant and was sent to fight in North Africa and Italy. He received a Purple Heart.
After VE Day he returned and married his college sweetheart, Jane A. Goodwin of Bridgeport.
He worked as a Soil Conservation Agent in Mason County for many years. He helped to start the Mason County Fair of which he was treasurer for many years. After leaving the U.S. Department of Agriculture he became a Realty Specialist with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers in Parkersburg working on various Ohio River projects. After his retirement, he concentrated on farming his family farm in Roane County and the oil and gas business.
He was preceded in death by his wife of almost 50 years. Surviving are his two children, Marlyn Bisher and husband Paul of Shepherdstown and son, William Cary Smith and wife Susan of Morgantown; grandchildren, Bryan, Kelly and Lindsay Smith of Morgantown and Adam and Ben Bisher of Shepherdstown and Laura Bisher Williams and husband Billy of Morgantown.
Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, March 1, 2008, at the Trinity United Methodist Church, 615 Viand Street, Point Pleasant, with Reverend Richard DeQuasie, officiating. Visitation will be held from 3:00 until 4:00 p.m., Saturday, March 1, 2008, at the church. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, March 2, 2008, at Smith Family Cemetery, Uler, WV (Roane County) with Reverend Richard DeQuasie, officiating.
