Obituary

Mabel Louise Costen, 90, of Point Pleasant, went home to be with her Lord, on Friday evening, August 5, 2011, at Holzer Medical Center. Mabel was a retired educator in Mason County, having taught at Arbuckle Grade School, Elmwood School and Ordnance Elementary. She was a 1937 graduate of Point Pleasant High School and graduated from Morris Harvey College, in Charleston. Mabel was a past member of the Tu-Endie-Wei Garden Club and was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, the Heavenly Hands Knitting Group, the Ordnance Red Hats Group, the Widow's Luncheon Group and was a charter member of the Point Pleasant River Museum. Mabel was honored in 1998, the recipient of the Mason County Professional Personnel Emeritus Award, given by the Board of Education and she was also a WSAZ Hometown Hero.

Mabel was born on October 27, 1920, in Leon, WV, a daughter to the late Dr. Benjamin Franklin and Cora (Woodall) Sommer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sherwood Costen; and her brothers, Benjamin Franklin and William Richard Sommer.

Mabel is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Kip Hartenbach, of Point Pleasant; her granddaughter, Jamie and Matt Swartz; and her great-grandsons, Chandler and Caden, all of Columbus, OH.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 9, 2011, at the Trinity United Methodist Church, with Rev. James Kelly officiating. Burial will follow in Kirkland Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held at the Crow-Hussell Funeral Home on Monday evening, August 8, 2011, from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church Multi-Purpose Building Fund, 615 Viand St., Point Pleasant, WV 25550.
