Hookie was born Martin Randall Woodall in Putnam, Co. WV on September 6, 1939 the last of sixteen children to the late William R and Alpha Jefferies Woodall. He was the baby of the family and was very well looked after by all his older siblings, but most of all he was mommy's boy and everyone knew it, this was something that Hookie embraced and remained so as he would take mom to church every Wednesday and Sunday until the time that she just could not attend any longer.

Hookie was a very kind and hard working man that always provided for his family spending most his life working two or more jobs without a complaint, for years his was the warm and welcoming face at Johnson's Supermarket that always greeted everyone with that infectious smile, he even worked for awhile at Pleasant Valley Hospital until he was finally able to retire. He was a very active member of the community spending his summers at the ballfields coaching the summer leagues were he was always a crowd favorite both at the fields as well as in the community.
Martin got the name Hookie at an early age, the legend has it that he could always compete and win when playing basketball with his older siblings because he had a beautiful hook shot that just could not be defended and seemed to always go in. Hookie also enjoyed playing cards, visiting with family and spending time with his kids, but to know his was to know that he loved his "Big Red Machine", if the Cinicnnati Reds were playing he was watching its safe to say that The Red's did not have a more loyal fan.
