Richard Pleasants Newell, Jr., 67, of Point Pleasant, died on Monday evening, May 11, 2009, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. He ran the cable system for 21 years in Point Pleasant, owned the Southfork Inn and retired from Pillsbury/General Mills in Wellston, as a computer engineer. He was a loving father, husband, grandfather, uncle and friend.
He was born, June 14, 1941, in Greensboro, North Carolina to the late Richard P. and Catherine (Kinney) Newell, Sr. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a special aunt who was like his mother, Elizabeth Kinney Liter.
He is survived by his wife, Mary (McLaughlin) Newell of Point Pleasant; two sons, Shawn and Mike Newell, both of Nashville, Tennessee; one sister, Mary Wamsley of Point Pleasant; three nieces and nephews, Greg Wamsley, Jeff Wamsley and Jodie Atkinson; two grandchildren, Amber and Steve Pursley and Derek Newell; one great-grandson, Owen Pursley and a special friend, Cindy Cullen.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Friday, May 15, 2009, at the Crow-Hussell Funeral Home, Point Pleasant, with Monsignor William Myers and Reverend Warren Baker, officiating. Burial will follow in Kirkland Memorial Gardens near Point Pleasant with military graveside honors by the West Virginia Honor Guard. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 5 until 7 P.M., Thursday, May 14, 2009. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Richard P.
