Robert Samuel
Painter
April 6, 1952 – April 16, 2026
Robert Samuel Painter, 74, passed away peacefully at home on April 16, 2026, following a short illness.
Born on April 6, 1952, Robert lived a life defined by dedication, resilience, and service to others. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Fred and Violet Painter; his younger brother, Brad Painter; his beloved daughter, Rebecca Painter; and the love of his life, Deborah Painter.
He is survived by his son, Fred Painter, and daughter-in-law, Mechelle Painter; his daughter, Erin Painter; and his cherished grandchildren, Hannah Painter, Christopher (Cory) Daniels, Johnathan Painter, Alexus (Gage) Michael, Nick Painter, and Natalie Holmes. He was also blessed with eight great-grandchildren, all of whom he loved deeply and took immense pride in. Robert is further survived by his siblings, Fredda Kent and Bill Painter, as well as his two faithful companions, Sugar and Howie.
Robert attended Marshall University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, a Master's degree in Journalism, and a minor in Physical Education. While at Marshall, he played football during the 1970 season—a year marked by a tragic plane crash that claimed the lives of many of his teammates and coaches. Robert carried the memory of that loss throughout his life, often sharing its profound lesson: to live fully and never take a single day for granted.
A lifelong educator, Robert devoted more than 40 years to teaching English to middle and high school students in Tennessee and West Virginia. His impact on generations of students was immeasurable. He was especially honored to be named "Favorite Teacher" by a former student at Point Pleasant High School. Robert was also a passionate advocate for educators through his involvement with the Mason County Teachers Union and extended his service to the Children's Center of America, supporting children in marginalized communities.
In October 2025, Robert was inducted into the Point Pleasant Football Hall of Fame in recognition of his role in his high school team's undefeated season—an achievement he held close to his heart.
Robert was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a steadfast advocate for civil rights, the rule of law, and the Constitution. He believed deeply in standing up for what is right and carried that conviction throughout his life.
Those who knew Robert will remember his strength of character, his compassion, and the lasting impression he left on everyone he met. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched.
Services will be held at Crow-Hussell Funeral Home in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, on Friday, April 24, 2026.
