Obituary

Smith McCausland, 97, of Pliny, passed away Monday, April 19, 2021, at his home, with his family by his side.  He was a lifelong farmer and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.  He was born May 7, 1923, in Pliny, a son to the late Alex and Lorena (Grimm) McCausland.  In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a son, John Smith McCausland; and sister, Harriet Brown.

Smith is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Louise; son, Dr. Kyle McCausland, of Pliny; daughter and son-in-law, Angela and (Richard) Potts, of Hilliard, OH; grandsons, Nicholas, Christopher and Matthew Potts; sister-in-law, Bunny Covey; niece and nephew, Andrea and (Tony) LaVechia and Christopher and (Leila) Covey; special God daughter, Anne Hammack (John), and many extended family and friends.

Smith was born in a log cabin on snowy May day on the family farm known as Grape Hill Farm in Mason County West Virginia. He was the last surviving grandson of General John McCausland. Smith graduated from Point Pleasant High School when he was 17 years old in 1940 and then, he attended West Virginia University for one year before returning to home to work on the farm with his father.  He met his wife on a blind date, and was married on August 30, 1952 to a beautiful Italian girl from Lansing, OH.  They moved to the family farm known as Grape Hill Farm, and raised twin sons and a daughter.  He continued to farm his entire life; this included raising beef cattle, sheep, and hogs, planting and harvesting crops such as hay, soybeans, and corn. He always embraced new farm technology such as no till farming.  Smith and his wife, Louise, liked to dance and traveled around the USA which included going to Cuba at one point.  He was a very loving husband, father, and grandfather.  He spent many hours with all of his family and friends.  He was a very patient, supportive man who always shared his knowledge and incite.  Smith had a great sense of humor and often a smile. He was always frank with his advice, but kind with the delivery. He was an inspiration to any and all that met him particularly to his children and grandsons. He will always live in our heart and our memories.
