Vala Randolph Sommer passed away peacefully in Bedford Texas, at the age of 89 on July 4, 2015. Loving wife, dedicated mother and educator, Vala always put the needs of others first. She was born to Otis and Vurl Randolph on March 31, 1926. After graduating from Point Pleasant High School with the class of 1942, she went on to receive her bachelor's degree from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and a master's degree in Education from the University of Louisville.

Married to William Richard (Dick) Sommer, she raised three children, then taught at Jeffersontown Elementary School for 25 years. She was predeceased by her husband, Dick Sommer, sister Rita Craig and brother Douglas Randolph. She is survived by her children, Frank H. Sommer, Jillene K. Quire and William R. Sommer Jr., five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held at the Crow-Hussell Funeral Home in Point Pleasant WV from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Saturday, July 11, followed by a service and burial at the Leon Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sierra Club, one of many causes dear to Vala's heart.
