William Jess Huffman, 93, of Point Pleasant, passed away on Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at the Emogene Dolin Hospice House, in Huntington. Jess was a self-employed businessman and was a member of the Jackson Ave. Baptist Church. He was a proud outdoorsman and multiple time national champion coonhunter and storyteller. Jess was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in WWII, in the European African Middle Eastern Theater. He served in the 2nd Armored Division "Hell on Wheels" Unit, 67th Recon Regiment, from November, 1941, until June, 1945. His medals include: Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct, American Defense.
Jess was born on January 12, 1920, in Hamlin, a son to the late Henry and Tennie (Martin) Huffman. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Verneda Gaye (McComas) Huffman. Jess is survived by his children, Pat Huffman, of Point Pleasant and Sheila Huffman Smith, of Huntington; grandchildren, Zeke and Carrie Smith, of Huntington and Jessi Leigh Huffman, of Hurricane; great-grandchildren, Brier and Emee Smith; brothers and sister, Bob Huffman, Troy "Shorty" Huffman, Ray Huffman, James Orville Huffman and Betty Huffman Layne; and brother and sister's-in-law, Duke and Loudean Adkins and JoAnn McComas.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, July 21, 2013, at the Crow-Hussell Funeral Home, with Rev. Joe Nott and Rev. Paul Day officiating. Burial will follow in Kirkland Memorial Gardens, with Military Rites being provided by the WV Honor Guard and the American Legion, Mason County Post #23. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, one hour prior to the service.
